1: Flatten the middle of the bread
Lay out your soft bread slices on a clean surface. Using your thumbs or the back of a spoon, press down the middle of the bread, leaving a small 1cm border around the edge.
Step 2: Add the Nutella Filling
Spread a small scoop of Nutella in the centre of each slice, avoiding the border to prevent leakage and to ensure it seals properly.
Step 3: Egg Wash, Fold and Seal the Edges
Make the egg wash by mixing the egg with the milk in a small bowl or ramekin, then using a pastry brush, brush it over the border. Set aside the remaining egg wash for the tops.
Fold the bread in half over the Nutella and press the edges together with your fingers and thumbs to ensure they stick.
Using a fork, firmly press down the edges to seal the filling inside. This step is important to keep the Nutella from oozing out while cooking (and it looks pretty).
Step 4: Apply the Egg Wash
Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the remaining egg wash over the top and edges of each toast pie. This helps create a golden, crispy crust when baked.
